梅雨の時期を彩る日本原産の落葉低木、紫陽花の季節になりました。英名は「Hydrangea」と言いギリシア語の「水」と「容器」が語源ですが、広義の原産地は日本です。和名の「紫陽花(アジサイ)」は、“藍色が集まったもの”という意味が転じたものと言われています。また、開花から咲き終わりにかけて色が変化する様子を「七変化」とも呼ばれています。葉も花も鮮やかですね。 It’s that time of year again. The season of hydrangeas, aeciduous shrub native to Japan that adds color to the rainy season. Known in English as “Hydrangea,” the name derives from the Greek words for “water” and “vessel,” though Japan is considered its broadest place of origin. The Japanese name “Ajisai” is said to have evolved from the phrase meaning “a gathering of indigo hues.” Additionally, the way the color changes from the time the flowers open until they fade is also referred to as “seven changes.” Both the leaves and the flowers are so vibrant.
